Oh my God! I’ve gone off the reservation! I’m actually suggesting caloric restriction for muscle gains! I can feel all the muscle heads shuddering in disgust. Well, before you get your pitchforks and torches, let me give a shot at trying to explain my stance.
You see, those that follow me on Twitter know that I’m back to fasting on a regular basis. The reason is simple : It’s by far the easiest way to lose fat by simply not thinking about food for one or two 24 hour sessions per week. Sometimes I fast even longer because I just don’t get around to eating. Hitting 30 hours or so seems pretty easy these days and I’m getting better definition (expect new photos soon) and my strength hasn’t suffered. In face, it’s improved! There, I said it! Not the gym…That’s an old bodybuilding mantra and could not be more true. You see, seeing your abdominal muscles’ definition requires low body fat levels. Think 10% and lower. To get there, you need to eat at a caloric deficit for an extended period of time. Doesn’t matter if you see it as a day-to-day think or weekly. From personal experience, considering your total caloric intake on a weekly basis is easier on the nerves and allows the mindset of “if I overeat today, I could undereat or even fat tomorrow”.
